We’re migrating to the Ignition app store!


Unfortunately we were recently contacted by Apple and have been informed that they will revoke our Enterprise Certificate on the 6th of April 2019 effectively rendering the Spike app useless. Without a valid Enterprise Certificate users will not be able to open Spike on their mobile devices. This means that on the 6th of April all current users that have the App Center version of Spike installed will not be able to use Spike anymore after they close the app and try to open it again.

After we got the news our initial reaction was to end the Spike project but after much thinking and realising the sheer amount of positive impact Spike has on so many people’s lives we finally found a solution to save Spike. We will stop relying on our Enterprise Certificate and from now on Spike will be distributed by the Ignition app store who will be responsible for signing Spike with their own Enterprise Certificate and resigning Spike in the future if the certificate gets revoked. This is a permanent solution for Spike and will allow us to be able to continue offering it to the general DIY public. Have in mind that Apple is being aggressive with certificate revokes so expect the Ignition certificate to be revoked from time to time (between 3-5 times a year). The good news is that Ignition will be able to resign Spike with a brand new certificate in less than an hour. This will probably result in no downtime for most users and installing a new certificate on your phone can be done in less than 5 minutes by following this guide.

This also means that Spike will no longer be distributed using the App Center platform and we will need to migrate all current users to the Ignition app store. Invites will no longer be required, users will be able to install Spike right away.

Having said that, all Spike users will need to complete the migration to Ignition before the 6th of April if they want to continue using Spike without any downtime. The migration can be done without any data loss and in less than 5 minutes by following this guide.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause but unfortunately there’s nothing else we can do. We tried hard to avoid this migration but there’s just no other solution. The good news is migrating from App Center to Ignition is a very simple process that can be done in about 5 minutes.

It’s important to note that the current Spike version available on Ignition (3.6.2) does not have the iCloud database backup/restore feature and doesn’t include the Apple Watch app, both have been removed. This is due to technical issues that Ignition is trying to overcome and we will notify users if/when the issue is resolved. In the meantime Spike Ignition will work the same as Spike App Center but without the Apple Watch app (complication continues to be available) and without the iCloud backup/restore feature.

We also want to take the time to thank all users that have donated to the Spike project. Without your support Spike would cease to exist <3. The migration to the Ignition app store implied long hours of coding to prepare Spike, purchasing new developer accounts and licenses for third party libraries and we’re struggling to pay the necessary bills to continue to keep the Spike project alive and active. Donations can be done here.

UPDATE (5 April, 10:40am GMT+0): After 24h of migration we’ve identified 2 major issues with Spike when signed by the Ignition app store due to the limited nature of their Enterprise Certificate: About 1/4 of users aren’t able to receive glucose readings inside the app when they lock their phones or switch to another app. Also, an unknown number of users are experiencing intermittent data loss when closing and opening Spike (some data is not being saved to the database). We’re currently looking at the data loss issue and think we might have a workaround… There’s still no solution for the backgrounding connectivity issues at the time. We’re closely monitoring the situation and will update our users when necessary.

At this time we aren’t able to guarantee a smooth transition to the Ignition store. Please rest assured we are doing our best.
